    Hello hello
My name is Karina and I’m a graphic designer & illustrator based in “Vancouver”.
I love finding the aesthetics in life, and I try to incorporate everyday things into my work.
I’m keen on branding and editorial design, and enjoy playing around with illustrations and typography.

In my spare time I’m baking, taking long walks, or buying useless trinkets online.
Talk to me about anything ✌︎

UX/UI Case Study | Figma, Adobe Illustrator

As a project, I was tasked with conducting a UX/UI case study for an app of my choice: Goodreads. As an avid user of the app, I had always felt that it had both UI and UX problems that could be fixed. Here, I tried to solve some of them, while implementing some new design elements that I think would work with the app’s purpose and its userbase.

The first major problem of the app is its outdated look.
The bland colours should work in their favour (being a book logging app), and yet they weren’t being used to their potential. To fix that, I decided to use creamier versions of the same colours, to give a warmer feel and make the app more visually appealing.
I stuck with the original logo as I didn't want to stray too far from the original branding, and tried to work off of it as best as I could.

I also changed all of the icons that they had, and opted for a slightly playful, chunky design.
For the typography, I chose the sans serif font Aktiv Grotesk for the headings and subheadings, and the slab serif Museo Slab for the body copy.

Here are the side by side comparisons of the old UI and the new UI. On the left are the befores, and on the right are the afters.
In order from top to bottom: Home screen, Friends screen, Currently Reading screen, Read Books screen, Profile screen, and the splash screen.
